Former Labour Party vice presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has recalled a striking warning from Peter Obi about Nigeria’s security challenges, urging citizens not to depend on foreign intervention to resolve the nation’s crises. Speaking in an interview with Arise TV, Baba-Ahmed cited Obi’s message: “Peter Obi once said Nigerians wake up, they’re killing you, and you are waiting for Americans. Wake up. No American will ever bomb you for your development.”
Baba-Ahmed emphasized that the United States will not use its taxpayers’ money to establish peace in Nigeria. “American taxpayers’ money is valuable, and they know the value, if we don’t know ours. Yes, Americans can strike. They struck Libya. They struck many places. Nobody from any country will come and do for you what you are lazy to do for yourself,” he stated.
He contrasted Nigeria’s situation with smaller nations that have achieved prosperity through effective leadership and citizen trust. Baba-Ahmed pointed out that Nigerians often excel abroad, noting that hospitals in these countries are staffed by highly skilled Nigerian doctors and surgeons.
According to him, the success of these nations lies not in their resources or population size but in strong governance where leaders are accountable, prioritize citizens’ welfare, and foster mutual trust. He suggested that Nigeria could similarly improve security and development through better leadership rather than waiting for external assistance.
