Pres. Tinubu appoints former INEC chairman, Mamood Yakubu, Omokri, FFK, others as ambassadors—report

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded a list of 32 ambassador-designate nominees to the Senate for confirmation, Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed on his verified X account. The list includes 15 career diplomats and 17 non-career appointees, bringing the total to 35 nominees when combined with three forwarded last week.

The nominations, communicated in two letters to Senate President Godswill Akpabio under Section 171 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), request prompt screening. Specific diplomatic assignments will be announced following Senate approval.

The non-career nominees include prominent former public officials and influential figures such as Professor Mahmood Yakubu, immediate-past INEC Chairman; Reno Omokri, former presidential aide; Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, immediate-past Governor of Enugu State; Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minister of Aviation and Culture & Tourism; Erelu Angela Adebayo, former First Lady of Ekiti State; Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, immediate-past Governor of Abia State; and Chief (Mrs.) Fatima Florence Ajimobi, former First Lady of Oyo State. Other notable names include Barrister Ogbonnaya Kalu, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Otunba Femi Pedro, and Ambassador Paul Oga Adikwu, with six women represented in the non-career category.

The career diplomats on the list comprise experienced Foreign Service officers, including Enebechi Monica Okwuchukwu (Abia), Yakubu Nyaku Danladi (Taraba), Maimuna Ibrahim Besto (Adamawa), Musa Musa Abubakar (Kebbi), Syndoph Paebi Endoni (Bayelsa), Chima Geoffrey Lioma David (Ebonyi), and Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim (Ogun), with four women among them. These professionals bring extensive expertise in international relations and diplomacy, expected to enhance Nigeria’s global engagements.

President Tinubu has indicated that additional ambassadorial appointments will be announced in the coming weeks, pending legislative confirmation.
