Private Army Is Receiving N100,000; Daily Ratio Was N1,500, Now President Increased To N5000-Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume has called for an urgent review and enhancement of welfare provisions for Nigerian soldiers, citing current conditions as inadequate for personnel confronting rising security threats nationwide. He raised the issue during a Senate plenary session discussing funding gaps in the armed forces.

Speaking on Channels Television, Ndume expressed concern that frontline troops continue to operate under challenging circumstances despite facing insurgency, banditry, and other violent crimes. He stressed that improving welfare is vital for both morale and operational effectiveness.

Highlighting the pay structure for junior personnel, Ndume noted: “A private Nigerian army now is receiving N100,000. The daily ratio before was N1,500. Now the president increased it to N5,000.” While acknowledging that the recent increment by President Bola Tinubu was commendable, he argued it remains insufficient given inflation and the extensive responsibilities placed on soldiers.

Ndume proposed a comprehensive welfare package that includes better salaries, improved accommodation, enhanced insurance coverage, and guaranteed support for families of fallen personnel. He also called for transparency in defence spending, insisting that funds allocated to military operations directly benefit the wellbeing of troops, thereby strengthening loyalty, discipline, and combat readiness.
