Primate Elijah Ayodele has sharply criticized Nigerian senators and the First Lady for hosting social gatherings while millions of citizens face economic hardship and rising insecurity.
In a recent live session on Facebook, Ayodele condemned the decision to summon senators for a social event instead of prioritizing urgent national interventions. He stressed that public officials should reflect the gravity of the country’s current situation rather than indulging in leisure.
“Nigerian senators, this is not proper. It’s not the time to dine now and whine,” the cleric declared, emphasizing the need for sober leadership during challenging times. He specifically addressed the First Lady, noting that such engagements send the wrong message to struggling citizens: “The wife of the president—well, you may not like what I’m saying, but this is the reality and this is the truth.”
Ayodele highlighted the compounding economic and security crises, urging government officials to focus on national stability rather than comfort. He questioned the purpose of social gatherings, suggesting that they undermine the seriousness of the challenges faced by Nigerians.
Instead, he recommended that leadership turn to spiritual solutions, calling for national prayers and fasting. “This is when you’re supposed to organize prayers, declare fasting for the nation,” he said, adding that moral responsibility is essential for governance during trying times.
