Australian football star Sam Kerr will leave Chelsea Women at the end of the season, bringing an emotional end to one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.
Chelsea confirmed that Kerr will depart when her contract expires this summer after spending six and a half years with the Blues.
During her time at the club, the striker scored an incredible 115 goals in 157 appearances, making her one of the greatest players ever to wear the Chelsea shirt.
Kerr joined Chelsea in November 2019 from American club Chicago Red Stars and quickly became one of the most feared forwards in women’s football.
Her goals played a major role in Chelsea’s dominance in England over recent years.
The Australia captain helped Chelsea win five Women’s Super League titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups and one Community Shield.
She also won the Women’s Super League Golden Boot award twice and finished second in the 2023 Ballon d’Or rankings.
One of Kerr’s most memorable qualities was her ability to score in big matches. She netted important goals in league title races, cup finals and UEFA Women’s Champions League games, becoming a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge.
Despite suffering a serious ACL injury that kept her out for nearly 20 months, Kerr made a strong comeback this season and reached the milestone of 100 Chelsea goals after returning to action.
Chelsea fans have reacted emotionally to the news on social media, with many describing her departure as “the end of an era.” Several supporters praised Kerr for helping grow women’s football and inspiring a new generation of fans around the world.
Kerr is expected to play her final Chelsea match against Manchester United Women this weekend, where supporters will have one last chance to celebrate a player widely regarded as a Chelsea legend.
