The Nigerian Senate has placed former Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Gwabin Musa on probation following his screening for the position of Minister of Defence. Lawmakers have given him six months to investigate a recent security lapse linked to the abduction of students in Kebbi State, warning that failure to act could result in his dismissal.
During the plenary session on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada raised concerns over the sudden withdrawal of soldiers from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State. The withdrawal occurred just 30 minutes before bandits abducted 25 students, sparking scrutiny over possible internal sabotage within the armed forces.
The Senate directed its joint committees on security and intelligence to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including any potential complicity from high-ranking officers. Senator Wadada emphasized the need for accountability, urging General Musa to identify and hold the responsible officer to answer.
In response, Gen. Musa acknowledged the seriousness of the breach and pledged to set up a dedicated committee to examine the matter once confirmed in office. He also highlighted systemic challenges, including poor road networks and difficult terrains that hinder rapid military response, while advocating for greater community involvement and intelligence collaboration to prevent future attacks.
The Senate’s resolution underscores increasing concern over recurring security lapses in Nigeria’s northwestern regions and reflects lawmakers’ insistence on accountability within the military hierarchy.
