Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, resigned on Monday, citing health reasons, in a development that has intensified concerns about the country’s worsening security situation. The resignation comes after months of heightened banditry, terrorism, and violent unrest affecting multiple regions. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepted the minister’s resignation and commended him for his service during a period marked by repeated attacks on rural communities, mass abductions, and mounting pressure on the nation’s armed forces.
The departure of the Defence Minister now brings renewed attention to the Presidency’s task of appointing a successor capable of stabilising a ministry central to Nigeria’s internal security response. The situation has sparked reactions from political observers and security analysts nationwide.
Former Senator Shehu Sani criticised the current state of Nigeria’s defence strategy in a post on X. He emphasised that, regardless of whether the minister resigned or was asked to step down, the Defence Ministry requires strong, experienced leadership to address the country’s security challenges. “Nigeria historically fought in the first and second World Wars, contributed forces for the restoration of peace in DRC Congo, Tanzania, Lebanon, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sudan etc. The nation should be able to defend itself against these criminal bandits and terrorists,” Sani stated.
He called for urgent attention to ensuring that the next Defence Minister can effectively manage the ministry and provide strategic leadership in the fight against insecurity, stressing that Nigeria’s citizens expect competent and decisive action at this critical time.
