Sowore Reacts After South African President Asked Foreigners To Respect The Country’s Laws Or Leave

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, over his remarks urging foreigners to respect the country’s laws amid rising concerns about xenophobic attacks.

Sowore, in a strongly worded reaction, described Ramaphosa’s comments as “disgraceful,” arguing that the South African leader failed to demonstrate the level of leadership required at a time of heightened tensions.

The criticism follows Ramaphosa’s Freedom Day address, where he was quoted as saying: “We say to those who are here legally, respect us as South Africans, respect our laws, conventions and our traditions, as you would want us to respect the laws and traditions of your own country.”

Reacting, Sowore said the statement reflected what he called a “dangerous failure” to protect the lives and dignity of Africans living in South Africa.

“At a moment that demanded courage, clarity, and decisive leadership, he offered a tepid tone,” Sowore stated, adding that the response was inadequate given the severity of xenophobic violence reported in parts of the country.

He further argued that the development is not an isolated incident, accusing Ramaphosa of previously showing weakness on the global stage. Sowore referenced the South African leader’s past engagement in Washington, D.C., including a meeting with former U.S. President, Donald Trump, where he claimed Ramaphosa appeared hesitant in defending his country’s interests.

The activist maintained that the South African government must take stronger steps to safeguard both citizens and foreign nationals, warning that failure to act decisively could further escalate tensions.

Sowore’s remarks have added to ongoing debates across Africa about xenophobia, leadership responsibility, and the protection of migrants within the continent.

As of the time of filing this report, the South African presidency has not issued any official response to Sowore’s criticism…Read_More…
