St Mary’s Catholic School Attack: We Heard Helicopter Hovering Around — Headteacher Amodu

The headteacher of St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Niger State, Blessing Amodu, has recounted the tense moments when a helicopter hovered over the school shortly after armed bandits kidnapped 239 students and 12 teachers. She described the atmosphere as frightening and chaotic as the attackers carried out the mass abduction.

Speaking in an interview with AIT, Amodu said the ordeal began with heavy banging on the school gate, followed by the terrified cries of students. According to her, the gunmen ordered staff to gather the children and demanded money before moving them away. She added that around 4 a.m., a helicopter flew low over the area, causing confusion as they could not determine whether it belonged to security forces or the attackers.

In the aftermath, the school premises turned into a scene of grief, with parents and relatives protesting and crying uncontrollably over the disappearance of their loved ones. Some families said they lost multiple children to the abduction and were struggling to imagine what the young pupils were enduring.

Amodu explained that the bandits eventually left in a convoy of vehicles and motorcycles, creating deafening noise as they sped off. She noted that the sound was so overwhelming that it was impossible to tell how many people or vehicles were involved.
