Bishop Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese and Niger State CAN Chairman, has refuted claims that St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwarra LGA, reopened without government clearance.
In an update shared on November 23, 2025, Yohanna confirmed that the number of victims abducted from the school has risen to 315, up from the initial figure of 227. This total includes 303 students and 12 teachers, following a verification exercise and final census. He explained that additional inquiries revealed 88 students who had tried to escape were also taken, as parents who initially believed their children had fled later returned seeking information.
Yohanna clarified that prior to the incident, the school had 629 pupils and students—430 in primary and 199 in secondary. He dismissed claims by the Niger State Government regarding an unauthorized reopening, insisting that no circular or prior notice was issued. “That is not true,” he stated, urging authorities to provide evidence if otherwise. He also emphasized that the school is owned by the Catholic Diocese, not any individual.
