“The Defence Ministry Needs Someone With Experience” – Shehu Sani Speaks On Defence Minister’s exit

The sudden resignation of Nigeria’s Defence Minister has reignited discussions about leadership and strategy at the Ministry of Defence, especially amid persistent insecurity challenges across the country. Analysts and citizens alike insist that the next Defence Minister must have extensive military experience and a practical understanding of modern warfare to effectively tackle banditry, terrorism, and violent attacks.

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani weighed in on the matter via his official X account on December 2, 2025. He stressed that internal politics should not override the urgent need for competent leadership. “Whether the Defence minister resigned or was removed, the Defence Ministry needs an experienced hand to lead in view of the exigencies of today,” Sani wrote.

He highlighted Nigeria’s historical contributions to international peacekeeping missions, including participation in the First and Second World Wars, as well as efforts in the DRC, Tanzania, Lebanon, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Sudan. Sani argued that Nigeria must be capable of defending itself against criminal bandits and terrorists.

His remarks underline the critical need for strategic, experienced leadership to restore confidence in national security and safeguard Nigerian communities.
