The Ministry Needs Experienced Hands— Shehu Sani Reacts to Resignation of Badaru as Defence Minister

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has weighed in on the resignation of Mohammed Badaru Abubakar as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, highlighting the urgent need for experienced leadership amid growing security challenges.

Badaru’s exit, which has sparked debates across political and security circles, comes as the country continues to face persistent threats from bandits, terrorists, and other violent groups. Sani emphasized that the core issue is not whether the former minister resigned or was removed, but ensuring that the defence ministry is led by someone with deep operational and strategic expertise.

“Whether the Defence Minister resigned or was removed, the Defence Ministry needs an experienced hand to lead in view of the exigencies of today. Nigeria historically fought in the First and Second World Wars, contributed forces for the restoration of peace in DRC Congo, Tanzania, Lebanon, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sudan etc. The nation should be able to defend itself against these criminal bandits and terrorists,” Sani said.

The former lawmaker, known for his outspoken views on national security, noted that Nigeria’s past contributions to global peacekeeping operations underline the importance of competent leadership to restore public confidence and strengthen military effectiveness. Analysts are now calling for a Defence Minister who combines technical know-how, political will, and a clear strategy for tackling the country’s complex security threats
