In a strongly worded message shared in a Facebook video, Nigerian cleric Primate Elijah Ayodele has criticised the conduct of the nation’s political leaders, insisting that their actions do not reflect the seriousness of Nigeria’s current challenges.
Ayodele declared that the country is going through a season that requires sober leadership and urgent problem-solving — not public celebrations from those elected to represent suffering citizens.
“This is not the type of government we need. This is not the time to be shouting hosanna, hallelujah in the Senate,” he said.
The cleric expressed displeasure over reports that top legislators attended a social event hosted by the First Lady. According to him, leaders drinking, dancing, and celebrating at such a time sends the wrong message to ordinary Nigerians facing insecurity, hunger, and hardship.
He questioned the value of such gatherings when many families are still mourning loved ones lost to attacks.
“What is the significance of this? Are we celebrating that some people were kidnapped, some people died?” Ayodele asked.
He urged lawmakers to show true leadership by prioritising compassion, accountability, and support for grieving families instead of indulging in festivities.
Ayodele concluded by calling on government officials to refocus on national security, economic relief, and policies that genuinely improve the lives of citizens.
“Let us give help to the families of those that are crying,” he said.
