Tinubu Didn’t See Me Fit to Be Appointed Ambassador Until the Crisis — Baba‑Ahmed

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, has criticized the government’s timing of ambassadorial appointments, revealing he was not considered for the role until the current national crisis unfolded.

Speaking on Channels TV News, Baba-Ahmed noted that key diplomatic positions were left vacant for too long, and the urgency to fill them only arose because of recent developments demanding immediate action. He suggested that without the crisis, many appointments, including his potential nomination, might have been delayed further.

“Unfortunately, my opinion is that this should have come a long time ago… The president didn’t see me fit or appoint ambassadors until we had the current crisis,” he stated.

Baba-Ahmed also emphasized the need for fairness and competence in diplomatic selections. He urged the National Assembly to scrutinize all candidates, particularly non-career diplomats, to ensure regional balance and effective representation of Nigeria abroad.

His remarks underscore growing concerns over delayed appointments and the importance of timely, equitable diplomatic engagement.
