Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over some of the individuals nominated by President Bola Tinubu for ambassadorial appointments. Obi highlighted the issue in a post on X on Monday, raising questions about the selection process and the quality of candidates proposed to represent Nigeria abroad.
Obi noted that several of the nominees were unexpected and did not appear to meet the competence, integrity, and experience required for such crucial positions. According to him, ambassadorial roles are not merely political appointments; they carry the responsibility of shaping Nigeria’s image on the global stage.
“Yes, some of the names being paraded to represent us as ambassadors globally are shocking. But with a leadership that has allowed mediocrity, corruption, and impunity to rise to the top, who else did you expect them to choose?” Obi stated, highlighting what he perceives as systemic weaknesses in the appointment process.
The former presidential candidate argued that merit, transparency, and professional credentials should guide public appointments. He suggested that the emergence of questionable nominees reflects a broader governance challenge where unqualified individuals sometimes occupy critical positions.
Obi’s comments have fueled discussions on the need for improved standards in selecting public officials, particularly those tasked with representing Nigeria internationally.
