A family in Nchoko, Ndechi community of Izzi Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, narrowly escaped a late-night inferno that destroyed their six-room house valued at over ₦40 million. The widower and his children survived without injury, but the property was completely lost.
According to reports, the widower—who is physically challenged and hearing-impaired—was startled by loud knocks on his window before two unidentified men allegedly pulled him out of the house. Moments later, parts of the building’s roof and ceiling reportedly began to collapse. His children were able to run out before the fire spread beyond control.
The family said the blaze consumed everything in the home, including clothing, food items, furniture, a fridge, and a television. The house, built just three years ago by their late parents, was reduced to ashes despite efforts by neighbours to help.
Community members have raised concerns that the fire may have been intentional. They noted that the building had no electricity due to previous disconnection and claimed they observed traces of inflammable substances in some rooms. While the widower said he has no idea who could be responsible, the speed and pattern of the fire have fueled suspicion.
The displaced family is currently sheltering in an abandoned poultry house and is appealing for support from state authorities, NEMA, churches, NGOs, and compassionate Nigerians. Residents also urged the government to strengthen fire service presence in rural areas, noting that fire outbreaks in Ebonyi remain frequent.
