Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has expressed concern over the ongoing abduction of students from St. Mary’s Catholic School, highlighting the difficulty in determining the exact number of children still missing. Speaking in an interview with Echo 360 TV, he emphasised that the priority remains the safe recovery of all victims.
According to Governor Bago, the state government is working closely with security agencies to locate and rescue the remaining students. He noted that, as of now, authorities have not been able to confirm the precise number of children abducted, making the situation particularly challenging.
To address the uncertainty, the Department of State Services (DSS) has opened a formal register for parents to report missing children. Governor Bago revealed that only 14 students had been documented so far, stressing the importance of parents coming forward to ensure all cases are accounted for.
“Unfortunately, we are in a position where we don’t even know the exact number of those people that are missing,” he said. “But what matters most today is that people are missing. The Department of State Services has opened a register for all parents who have lost their children to go and register. We are hoping that more parents will call in so that we can know exactly the number of people who are missing.”
