Segun Showunmi has called on South-western states to take bold action in addressing insecurity in the region, following a recent meeting of the zone’s governors in Ibadan. He emphasized that the South-west can no longer wait for other regions to solve problems that affect its people.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Showunmi stated that the South-west has the talent, experience, and strategic thinking necessary to tackle security challenges, provided the region acts with unity and purpose. He suggested that creating an effective security framework would allow the zone to implement innovative solutions and collaborate with credible international partners to strengthen safety and development.
He warned that the South-west risks being burdened by issues stemming from regions that have neglected their responsibilities. “We refuse to be endangered. We refuse to be helpless. The South West will not bow to the consequences of others’ negligence,” he said, stressing the importance of self-reliance and proactive measures.
Showunmi also reflected on the enduring legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, noting that the educational foundation he established produced generations of thinkers capable of defending the region’s interests. He argued that this cultural and intellectual heritage remains one of the South-west’s greatest assets in confronting modern challenges.
