“When Sheikh Gumi Went To Meet Those Boys In The Forest, I Invited Him To Come And See Me–Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently shared insights from a private conversation he held with Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi regarding Nigeria’s worsening insecurity in forested areas and the highly fortified nature of bandit enclaves. Obasanjo told reporters that after Gumi’s visits to remote camps occupied by armed groups, he invited the cleric to his residence to discuss what he observed firsthand.

During their discussion, Gumi provided a vivid account of the severity of the security situation, explaining that official reports often underestimated the difficulty of accessing these camps. According to Obasanjo, Gumi emphasized that some government claims about security operatives entering bandit hideouts were inaccurate, noting that the territories were heavily reinforced, making operations extremely challenging.

Obasanjo highlighted the human cost of the crisis, particularly the involvement of minors. Gumi reportedly encountered children aged 13 to 15 who were already addicted to drugs and trained to handle firearms. “These boys are both victims and participants,” Obasanjo said, stressing that they were trapped in a violent environment far beyond their control.

The former president noted that their conversation also touched on operational challenges, the importance of accurate intelligence, and the need for careful planning to minimize casualties. He revealed that Gumi’s descriptions of the forest settlements and the psychological strain on residents were deeply moving, underscoring the complexity of addressing Nigeria’s insecurity.
