When You Call Herdsmen For Peace, They Come With Guns For A Reason, Can You Call IPOB For Peace—Gumi

Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has stirred fresh reactions after stating that Fulani herdsmen often respond positively to peace calls, even when they show up with guns. According to him, their armed appearance during peace discussions is usually “for a reason,” and should not be misunderstood. He added that, unlike Fulani herdsmen, groups such as IPOB and Boko Haram cannot be easily invited for dialogue.

The respected scholar made this known in a video interview posted by Channels TV, where he spoke passionately about insecurity, negotiations, and the challenges of engaging armed groups in Nigeria. Gumi emphasized that, in his experience, Fulani herdsmen are more willing to embrace dialogue when compared to other violent groups operating in the country.

In his words:

“If you have been following this issue, the Fulani herdsmen have consistently been calling for peace. And when you call them for peace, they may come with their guns for many reasons, but they still come for peace. Can you call IPOB for peace? Can you call Boko Haram? I think the former president once called Boko Haram for peace, and they came. But when the effort didn’t materialize, it became difficult to bring them back to the table.”
