Wike meets APC National Chairman amid Rivers screening controversy

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, visited the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, at his Abuja residence on Tuesday.

The visit occurred amidst significant political tension in Rivers State, sparked by the outcome of the APC’s screening of aspirants for the upcoming State House of Assembly elections.

The screening process has been a major point of contention within the party’s state chapter.

A committee led by former lawmaker Muraina Ajibola cleared only 33 aspirants, while disqualifying 65 others from a pool of 98 who had purchased nomination forms for the 32 available seats.

This high rate of disqualification has fueled internal friction and raised questions about the criteria used by the committee.

While the details of the discussion between Wike and Yilwatda were not made public, the timing of the meeting suggests it was centered on the unfolding crisis in Rivers. Wike’s involvement is notable given his influential role in Rivers State politics and the ongoing shifts in party alignments within the region.
