Former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, has described Nigeria’s security challenges as complex, noting that multiple groups are responsible for unrest across the country.
In a video shared by The Cable on Monday, December 1, 2025, General Irabor explained that some terrorists act based on specific ideologies, while others deliberately target Christians. He also highlighted groups that attack entire communities with the intent of displacing residents and taking control of land.
“The reality is that our issues in terms of security challenges are multifaceted,” General Irabor said. “Just as you have terrorists who have an ideology, you also have those who are bent on targeting Christians, and there are also those who are targeting communities: desiring to displace communities and wanting to stay in those communities to be able to have a voice.”
He emphasized that understanding the different motives behind these attacks is crucial for devising effective strategies to protect vulnerable populations.
