Photos have emerged of a pregnant woman who died shortly after undergoing a dental procedure at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi, sparking concern and calls for accountability.
The woman, identified as twenty-eight-year-old Viona Munai, was nine months pregnant and preparing to welcome her first child.
According to her husband, Eludo Kenya, he took her to the hospital on Sunday, February twenty-fourth, after she complained of severe tooth pain.
She was admitted that same night.
Eludo stated that he left the hospital expecting his wife to receive routine care.
However, he was shocked the next morning to learn that a tooth had already been extracted without his knowledge.
He later received information that she had been taken to the operating theatre.
He reported that he waited for several hours as other patients were treated and discharged, but he did not receive clear updates regarding his wife’s condition during that time.
In response, hospital management provided a different account of events.
In a statement, the facility said that ongoing procedures had delayed access to the theatre until one became available.
Officials clarified that Viona was not taken in for childbirth but for an emergency intervention to assist her breathing through intubation.
The hospital further stated that she had been admitted in critical condition due to a life-threatening dental infection that had worsened because of her pregnancy.
It maintained that all medical procedures were properly followed.
Despite these explanations, the family has questioned the circumstances surrounding her death and is now calling for a thorough investigation.
The case has added to rising concerns over alleged medical negligence in Kenya’s public hospitals, where similar incidents have been reported in recent years.
Advocates continue to push for stronger oversight and improved patient care standards.
Viona’s death has left her family in deep grief as they seek answers over the loss of both mother and child.
