English football defender Millie Bright has announced her retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable and trophy-filled career with Chelsea FC Women.
Bright joined Chelsea in late 2014 from Doncaster Belles as a young and promising defender. At the time, she was just 21 years old and looking to establish herself at the top level of women’s football.
Her move quickly proved to be a turning point, as she became a key part of a team that would go on to dominate English women’s football for over a decade.
In her early years at the club, Bright played an important role in helping Chelsea win their first major trophies in 2015, including the Women’s FA Cup and the Women’s Super League title.
These successes marked the beginning of a golden era for the club, with Bright at the heart of the defence. Over time, her consistent performances, strong leadership, and commitment helped her rise through the ranks.
Her leadership qualities were later recognised when she was appointed club captain in 2023. As captain, she led by example, guiding the team through important matches and maintaining high standards on and off the pitch. She also helped the team achieve an unbeaten league campaign during the 2024/25 season, further cementing her legacy.
During her 12-year stay at Chelsea, Bright made over 300 appearances and became one of the club’s longest-serving players. More importantly, she played a central role in the club’s success, winning a total of about 20 major trophies.
These include multiple Women’s Super League titles, FA Cups, and League Cups, making her one of the most decorated players in the club’s history.
Since joining the club in 2014/15, Chelsea Women have won the Women’s FA Cup six times. They secured the trophy in the 2014/15, 2017/18, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23, and 2024/25 seasons.
The 2015 victory marked the club’s first-ever major trophy, starting a period of dominance in the competition right after Bright’s arrival.
Not only did they dominate the FA Cup during her time at Chelsea, but Chelsea Women have also dominated the Women’s Super League (WSL) since 2015, winning eight league titles in that period.
Under manager Emma Hayes, they established a record-breaking streak, winning every league title from the 2019/20 season through to 2024/25. This further proves the influence of Millie on the club.
