Media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has shared details about his past battle with smoking addiction, revealing that he struggled with the habit for over a decade before eventually quitting.

Ebuka made the revelation during a recent episode of the MENtality podcast, where he appeared alongside singer Banky W and social media health influencer Aproko Doctor.

During the conversation, the television host reflected on how early he started smoking and how deeply the habit became part of his lifestyle over the years.

“I started smoking JSS3. I smoked for 13 years. By the time I entered university, I was smoking two packs a day. I was a heavy smoker,” he recalled.

According to Ebuka, there came a point when he decided he needed to stop, prompting him to consciously work toward overcoming the addiction.

Although he did not go into full detail about the process, he explained that quitting required deliberate effort and discipline after years of dependence.

The discussion on the podcast focused largely on addiction, self-awareness, and unhealthy coping mechanisms, with each guest sharing personal experiences and reflections.

Banky W also opened up during the episode, revealing that he once struggled with pornography addiction while trying to distance himself from promiscuity.

“I was trying to battle pornography and decided that instead of moving from woman to woman, I should just be watching pornography,” he admitted.

Reacting to the discussion, Ebuka observed that many people often replace one harmful habit with another while attempting to escape destructive behaviour patterns.

The conversation later shifted toward the psychological causes of addiction, with Aproko Doctor explaining that many addictive behaviours are connected to emotional pain and the desire for temporary relief or pleasure.

“Human beings have two ambitions. The first is to avoid pain. The second is to chase pleasure. A lot of drug use comes because a lot of people are trying to avoid pain,” he explained.

The trio stressed the importance of self-control, emotional awareness, and honest conversations around addiction, especially among men who may struggle silently with unhealthy habits.

Their discussion has since generated reactions online, with many fans praising the guests for speaking openly about personal struggles that are often considered taboo.

Several social media users also commended Ebuka for being transparent about his experience with smoking addiction, noting that public figures rarely discuss such issues openly.

Over the years, Ebuka has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most respected television personalities, known for hosting major shows including Big Brother Naija.

His latest revelation, however, offered fans a more personal glimpse into challenges he faced before achieving mainstream success.

The podcast episode has continued to spark broader conversations online about mental health, addiction, and the pressures many people face while trying to navigate personal growth and self-improvement.

Fans have also applauded the guests for encouraging more openness around issues often hidden behind public appearances and celebrity lifestyles.
