Romuald Wadagni has officially emerged as the president-elect of Benin following a decisive victory in the country’s latest presidential election, according to provisional results released by the Independent Electoral Commission (CENA).

The results show Wadagni securing a landslide win with more than 94 percent of the total votes counted, while voter turnout stood at nearly 60 percent.

The announcement has positioned him as the clear successor in what is seen as a continuation of the current administration’s political and economic direction.

Wadagni, who previously served as Benin’s finance minister, is widely regarded as a close ally and preferred successor of outgoing president Patrice Talon

His emergence signals continuity in governance, particularly in the areas of economic reform, infrastructure development, and tourism expansion.

Over the past decade, Benin has experienced steady economic growth under the current leadership, with increased investment in public infrastructure and efforts to modernize key sectors of the economy. Wadagni’s victory is expected to sustain these policies while introducing new approaches to address emerging national challenges.

Despite the overwhelming win, the incoming president faces pressing issues, including rising inequality and increasing insecurity in northern regions of the country. These security concerns have been linked to extremist activities, which remain a major challenge for West African nations.

Wadagni’s only opponent, Paul Hounkpe, conceded defeat even before the final results were officially completed. In his concession statement, he congratulated the president-elect and emphasized the importance of democratic respect and national unity during political transitions.

The Independent Electoral Commission is expected to confirm the final official results in the coming days, formally sealing Wadagni’s victory.

As Benin prepares for a new political chapter, expectations remain high that the incoming administration will balance economic continuity with urgent reforms aimed at improving security and reducing inequality across the country.
