Former lawmaker Shehu Sani has reacted after former President Goodluck Jonathan responded to growing calls for him to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a post shared on his X account, Sani said Jonathan is often called upon whenever election season approaches. He compared the situation to a zebra deciding how to cross a river filled with crocodiles, suggesting that the former president faces a difficult political decision ahead of 2027.
Jonathan made the remarks while meeting youth groups in Abuja who visited him to encourage him to return to the presidential race. He explained that contesting for president is a serious matter that requires deep thinking and consultations.
The former president also praised the youths for showing concern about the future of Nigeria. According to him, peace and credible elections are important for the country’s growth because many qualified people avoid politics when elections are not transparent.
Jonathan further expressed concern over low voter turnout in Nigeria, saying the country records one of the lowest participation rates during elections despite its large population. He urged young Nigerians to obtain their voter cards and take part in the electoral process.
He added that leadership challenges have contributed to the negative treatment many Nigerians face abroad and stressed the need for better governance in the country.
