Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface set to undergo surgery

Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface is set to undergo surgery on a persistent knee injury, according to reports.

The Nigeria international is currently on a season-long loan at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen but has struggled with fitness issues throughout the campaign.

Boniface has yet to complete a full 90 minutes for Bremen this season, managing just 326 minutes of playing time due to the injury.

Reports from German publication, BILD indicate that Bayer Leverkusen’s medical team has advised the player to undergo surgery after the problem failed to improve. The injury was sustained during a training session in early December and was initially thought to be minor, but the pain has continued.

Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, and Werder Bremen’s sporting director, Clemens Fritz, are reportedly in discussions to agree on a joint decision regarding the player’s treatment before Christmas.

Boniface, who has previously suffered two cruciate ligament injuries, is likely to miss the remainder of the season if he proceeds with another operation.
