According to a report by Premium Times on Sunday, April 19, 2026, former Plateau State governor, Joshua Dariye, has called for calm following the removal of Julius Dabilang as the Senior District Head of Mushere in Bokkos Local Government Area.
His appeal came after an expanded stakeholders’ meeting of the Mushere Chiefdom held in Jos, where community leaders and representatives gathered to discuss the situation and its implications.
The development has drawn attention within the state due to the reactions it generated and the issues surrounding the decision to remove the traditional title holder.
The Plateau State Government had earlier appointed Julius Dabilang to serve as the Senior District Head of Mushere.
However, the appointment became controversial after petitions were submitted by some individuals who raised concerns about his eligibility.
The petitioners pointed to a conviction delivered by a High Court in Nasarawa State in 2023, arguing that the judgement should disqualify him from holding such a position.
The matter led to further review by the relevant authorities, eventually resulting in the decision to remove him from office.
The removal of Dabilang triggered protests within the Mushere community, particularly involving women who took to the streets to express their grievances.

The demonstration attracted attention due to its nature, as the protesting women marched unclothed through parts of the area.
This form of protest was widely discussed within the community, as it is considered unusual and not commonly associated with local traditions.
The reaction reflected the level of concern and dissatisfaction among some members of the community regarding the decision to depose the district head.
Speaking after the stakeholders’ meeting, Dariye explained that the removal of Dabilang followed due process, as the government acted based on the concerns raised in the petitions and the existing court judgement.
He urged residents of Mushere to remain calm and to conduct themselves in a peaceful and law-abiding manner.
According to him, maintaining order is important as the community navigates the situation and seeks to address the issues that have arisen from the decision.
Dariye also noted that the stakeholders’ meeting brought together district heads, title holders, and other key figures from across the Mushere Chiefdom.
The purpose of the meeting was to create an avenue for dialogue and to reduce tensions that had developed within the community.
He acknowledged that the removal had led to divisions among residents, making it necessary for traditional leaders and stakeholders to step in and facilitate discussions aimed at restoring stability.
In his remarks, Dariye expressed concern about the nature of the protest carried out by some of the women, describing it as inconsistent with the customs of the Mushere people.
He pointed out that even during previous difficult periods, including times of violence, such actions had not been witnessed in the community.
His comments highlighted the cultural dimension of the situation, as leaders seek to balance expressions of dissatisfaction with respect for local traditions and values.
He said, “We have faced killings before, yet our women never protested naked. Nudity is alien to Mushere; it is strange to our land.”
