Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has revealed why he constantly prays for Nigeria, stressing that the country’s stability is crucial not just for its citizens but for the entire West African region.
Mahama made this known while speaking on regional security and economic realities, where he highlighted Nigeria’s massive influence across neighboring countries, including Ghana.
According to him, Nigeria’s progress or struggles inevitably affect smaller nations within the sub-region due to its population size and economic strength.
Describing Nigeria as a country of “key security interest,” the Ghanaian President explained that its stability directly contributes to the well-being of surrounding nations.
He noted that when Nigeria thrives, countries like Ghana also benefit, particularly in terms of trade, security, and regional cooperation.
Mahama pointed out that Nigeria’s population, estimated at over 200 million people, makes it a dominant force in West Africa. As a result, any instability within the country could trigger ripple effects beyond its borders.
He expressed concern that economic hardship or insecurity in Nigeria could lead to increased migration into neighboring countries, placing pressure on their resources and infrastructure.
In his words, Mahama said he prays daily for Nigeria to overcome its challenges and move towards stability and prosperity.
He emphasized that it is in the best interest of countries like Ghana to see Nigeria succeed, noting that a struggling Nigeria could lead to unintended consequences for smaller nations in the region.
“When you have cousins about 250 million of them, you would want them to do well so that one million of them do not come drifting towards a small country like Ghana,” he said. “So every day when I wake up, I pray to God and say, ‘God, let Nigeria get their act together.’”
His remarks reflect growing concerns about regional interdependence in West Africa, where political instability, insecurity, and economic challenges in one country can have far-reaching consequences.
Nigeria, being Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies, plays a central role in shaping the fortunes of the region.
