A United States-based humanitarian worker, Alex Barbir, has dismissed allegations linking him to violence in parts of Nigeria, insisting that his activities are focused solely on humanitarian support, protection of vulnerable communities, and rebuilding efforts.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News, Barbir addressed growing concerns about his involvement in crisis-affected regions in Nigeria, including areas in Plateau State, where his presence has reportedly been associated with tensions in some communities.
He strongly denied claims that his public statements or actions encouraged attacks or contributed to violence.
“I have never once called for anybody to be murdered. I have called for people to be protected,” he said.
Barbir explained that his advocacy consistently promotes stronger security measures from authorities while also supporting communities to defend themselves in situations where their lives are at risk.
He also rejected suggestions that his recent visit to Plateau State triggered a reprisal attack that allegedly led to fatalities. According to him, the incident in question occurred before his arrival in the area.
“They had killed two people before I arrived. So it’s a false narrative to say my presence caused that,” he stated.
The humanitarian worker noted that the region has long experienced cycles of violence and reprisals, stressing that such incidents predate his involvement in local reconstruction and relief efforts.
While acknowledging the criticism directed at him, Barbir maintained his stance on self-defence in communities facing persistent insecurity.
“If the government is failing to protect you, you should protect yourselves from people who would take your life. There’s nothing wrong with that,” he said.
He further clarified that the crisis affects multiple groups across religious and ethnic lines, adding that his work is not targeted at any particular community or agenda.
Barbir also dismissed allegations that he is advancing foreign political interests in Nigeria, challenging critics to provide evidence to support their claims. He explained that his initiatives are funded through donations from churches, humanitarian organisations, and private supporters.
According to him, his focus remains on rebuilding and restoring communities affected by violence, particularly in states such as Benue and Plateau.
Barbir is associated with humanitarian initiatives including Building Zion and Equipping the Persecuted, both of which are led by filmmaker Judd Saul. Through these platforms, he has participated in rebuilding homes, schools, and places of worship in conflict-affected communities.
Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding his work, Barbir said he remains committed to returning to Nigeria to continue reconstruction and relief efforts aimed at supporting displaced and affected residents.
As reactions continue to trail his comments and activities, the debate over humanitarian intervention and security narratives in conflict-prone regions remains ongoing.
