Ademola Lookman delivered a standout performance on Saturday night, scoring in a dramatic Copa del Rey final that ultimately ended in disappointment for Atlético Madrid against Real Sociedad.

The Nigerian forward struck in the 19th minute to bring Atletico level after Sociedad had shocked them with a lightning-fast opener just seconds into the match.

His goal steadied the Spanish giants and shifted momentum back into their favour during a tense opening phase of the final.

The strike was not just important for the match situation but also carried historical significance. It marked Lookman’s third goal in the Copa del Rey campaign and placed him in a unique category among Nigerian footballers.

He has now become only the second Nigerian player ever to score in a Copa del Rey final, following in the footsteps of Finidi George.

Finidi achieved his landmark moment in 1997 while playing for Real Betis in their final against FC Barcelona

In that memorable encounter, Finidi put Betis ahead 2-1 in the 82nd minute, although Barcelona eventually fought back to win 3-2 after extra time.

Saturday’s final in Spain followed a similarly dramatic pattern. After Lookman’s equaliser, Sociedad restored their lead just before halftime through a penalty, leaving Atlético Madrid chasing the game once again.

However, they responded in the second half when Julián Álvarez levelled the score late on to force extra tension in the closing stages.

Despite both sides pushing for a winner, neither could break the deadlock in normal time, sending the match into penalties. In the shootout, Real Sociedad held their nerve to secure a 4-3 victory and lift the Copa del Rey trophy for the fourth time in their history.

For Atlético Madrid, the defeat extends their wait for another Copa del Rey triumph. The last time they lifted the trophy was in 2013, when they defeated city rivals Real Madrid 2-1 after extra time at the Santiago Bernabéu in one of their most famous cup victories.

Although the result was painful for Diego Simeone’s side, Lookman’s contribution stood out as a major highlight.

His ability to perform on a big stage once again reinforced his growing reputation in European football and etched his name alongside one of Nigeria’s all-time greats in the competition’s history.
