UNIZIK: I Didn’t Know He Was a Lecturer, I Thought He Was a Student Until – Precious

According to a report by PREMIUM TIMES, Precious Mbakwe, the student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) seen in a viral video and accused of assaulting a lecturer, has shared her version of events. She claims that she was unaware he was a lecturer at the time of the altercation.

Ms. Mbakwe, a third-year student of History and International Studies, and Chukwudu Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts, were involved in an incident that took place in the university hallway. The situation escalated after Mr. Okoye interrupted Ms. Mbakwe while she was recording a video.

In her statement, Ms. Mbakwe said she was filming content when she suddenly felt someone push her and say, “Excuse me.” Her initial assumption was that it was a fellow student. However, she was taken aback when she turned around and saw a man she had never seen before.

“At first, I was under the impression that it was a student. However, when I turned around, I was shocked to see a man who turned out to be a lecturer, unbeknownst to me,” she said.

She alleged that after pushing her, Mr. Okoye attempted to take her phone.

“I begged him to stop dragging my phone, saying, ‘I’m sorry, sir. Why are you doing that?’ However, he did not speak a word while pulling at my phone until it fell to the ground and broke,” she said.

Ms. Mbakwe further alleged that the lecturer grabbed her in an inappropriate manner during the struggle. In an attempt to defend herself and break free, she bit him.

In the viral video, Ms. Mbakwe was seen confronting Mr. Okoye while visibly upset. At one point, she grabbed his shirt, causing a portion of his brown native outfit to tear.

Photographs circulating online show bite marks on the lecturer’s arm, while another image reportedly shows him receiving medical attention at the school clinic.

Following the incident, Ms. Mbakwe claimed that she felt unsafe after being confronted by students from the lecturer’s department.

“I witnessed students of Theatre Arts coming up to me while carrying weapons. I was so terrified and hurt. I really was,” she said.
